« on: July 21, 2004, 09:28:52 AM »

I was kicking around August 15th for our next viewing date.  How's that work for everyone?

BTW - in terms of material, I was going to recommend we watch one disk (3 episodes) of Hellsing, and one disk of Cowboy Beebop - otherwise I am open to other stuff, like Miyazaki (sp?), etc.  I figure we will shoot for the same time (Noon - 10 PM), and I will want to put out another schedule so people can hit only the times they want to.

There is stuff in August that I have, but I'm not sure when.

If we are free I will attend.

I have the following things on DVD:
Samurai X (movie)
Ruruoni Kenshin (series, 110 episodes or so)
Bubblegum Crisis (hehe!)  (short series)
Ninja Scroll (just bloody) (movie)
Some Other Stuff That I Can't Remember Right Now

Unless I'm out of town, I'm also in.  I can't think of anything I have to do except maybe not be here.  Pennsic.  Also, and I'm clearly a lazy ass.  I've been meaning to write up a list of the stuff that I have, in particular, the stuff that I still freaking have shrink wrapped after something like 4 years that I really should bloody well either watch or sell.

Asume that most of what follows is spelled wrong.

Because interest was expressed in it last time, I have the Studio Ghebli (sp?) Boxed Set, which is to say, I have a Chinese region 0 encoded Hayao Miyazaki boxed set.  It has either 8 or 12 movies and I can't identify them all.  These are the ones I remember:

Mononoki Hime
La Porkorosa
Grave of the Fireflies
My Neighbor Totoro
La Puta (called castle in the sky in the disney release)
Kiki's Delivery Service
::the one with the racoons:: I can never remember.  It's V. Cute.
Nauscaa

To sort of offset B's shonin tendancies with more variety, I might recommend from the series that I have and have seen:

Shojoish stuff:
The 4 sets of Fushugi Yuugi
Escaflowne
Ranma 1/2
Magic Knights Rayearth
Van Dread
Saber Marionette J
Revolutionary Girl Utena

And finally stuff that I have that may or may not be shonin, but I think B/Others will like:
Jin-Roh
Gatsaraki
Flames of Recca
Wies Cruis (white cross; this belongs sort of in both lists)
X (some but not all of)

We should be there again... and will bring the first Inuyasha dvd.  Also, one of these days, I'll have a copy of the Hikaru no Go avis.

I'll second the motion of Hellsing and Cowboy Bebop.

Yeah, fucker.

In case it wasn't apparent, two thumbs up for Cowboy Bebop and Hellsing.  I am tempted to get them and watch them on my own, they were so good (or fucked up, as in Hellsing).

I can lend you Cowboy Bebop if you want to marathon it.  Unfortunately, Helsing came out during my 2 year hiatus from anime, also I didn't expect it to be that good.  But it was.

Revolutionary Girl Utena

...don't you dare bring that accursed series into my home.  It hurt my brain so badly it made me spit blood, you sadistic bastard!

I have heard mostly good things about all the rest of those - although I might be one of the only people ever to have disliked Graveyard of the Fireflies.  I have always been very curious about Nauscaa, Kiki's and Gatsaraki.

Naga Mii,

Please bring an anime series that causes Brian physical pain.

I feel I owe him one for Lain and BoogiePop Phantom.

Thanks,

My fear is that anything that I can bring to cause Brian pain will be that much worse on everyone else.  Though I think if we made him watch something very shojo it would cause him a great deal of pain in the form of annoyance and dislike.

I'll look for the cutest series I have.

Yes - I mostly dislike Tenchi - and even more greatly the dread bunny-ship.  But Utena is just plain fucked-up.  Particularly the movie.  Hurts my head.  A girl turns into a motorcycle for no good reason - its not right.  And I would certainly not call it "cute" - particularly the drugging incestous rape scene.  Yuck.

Was that legend of the overfiend?

Actually, maybe we should consider a "bad" anime day.  That might be fun.

Shojo rocks.  This is why Brian and I rarely watch anime together.  ;)

Kay - so the Anime viewing is this Sunday.  I would like to write up a rough schedule like we did last time so people can pick and choose what they are or aren't into.  Here are what I wanted to throw out on the table (should leave plenty of other stuff):

3 Episodes of Cowboy Beebop (About an hour)
3 Episodes of Hellsing (About an hour)

Also, I am really interested in a flick that I have seen in Best Buy and have order from Netflix - it is a series of three short stories called "Memories" by Katsuhiro Otomo (guy who did Akira).  Looks pretty cool - I am thinking real artsy.

What else do people wanna watch?

I'll look for the cutest series I have.

I think the cutest thing we have is Pretear, although kaedwen has some AVI's that are much worse...

I didn't see an easy way to get to here from scylla and had to go searching thru old emails to find it, am i just blind?  It looks like everything else is game related and since i'm not in that game, not likely to check this much...

Kaedwen said we'd be going but I think he's forgotten and has a relative here this weekend so I don't know if we can  go or not...if we can we'll bring some Inu Yasha...I just watched the memories (still have the disk, borrowed) but dont think it was good enough to watch again...other stuff we have one or more disks of:

Ranma 1/2
Angelic Layer
Bubblegum Crisis (the original and another one)
Slayers
Lodoss Wars (both sets)
Princess Mononoke
Castle In The Sky
Kiki's Delivery Service
Spirited Away
The Magic-User's Club (don't recommend)
saigon maisson (i think thats the name? by same person that did ranma and inu yasha)
maybe others I can't remember...will try to check later...

we also have a 'real' movie called "max magician and the magic rings" if anyone wants to see an example of why LARPS should not be filmed (its not a LARP, that we know, its just REALLY bad...)  its not cute, but it would be painful Wink

Off of main Scylla, top right under features, click "Yabbse" to get here.  And/or next time we'll make Brian also send e-mail. =)

S' okay - it ended up just being me, Mark, and Rob.  Rob and I finished Reign the Conqueror (which had a very anti-climactic and wierd ending), and the three of us watched the first four eps of Ninja Scroll (The Series), and 4 more eps of Cowboy Beebop (one of which we will replay for everyone else if we have a bigger turn out). Luckily catching up on both is pretty easy - Beebop is pretty episodic, and Ninja Scroll has a very minimal plot (two Ninja clans, Jubei is badass, bloodshed and freaky super-Ninja fun ensues).
