The scary part is that they did it with just 200K$ and a grad student.  Of course, we'll have to see if the FDA goes for it Smiley

Woah.  That's pretty fucking cool.  If anyone wants to hurt their brain a little, I have access to the Journal of Virology's online articles.  JV is a very reputatable journal, FYI.  :-)  It's cool being a student, sometimes.

I don't understand a lot of the algebra behind their theory, but the actual idea is really damn creative, I have to say.  If anyone wants an interpretation, I think what they are saying is that the nucleic acid of the therapeutic virus (crHIV-1) is integrated into the nucleic acid of the pathogenic HIV-1 virus, so whenever HIV-1 replicates, so does crHIV-1.  The news article describes them as kinda being "stuck together," which is a confusing way to describe the interaction.  It isn't like one virus is just glued to the outside of the other.  crHIV-1, if I am understanding this correctly, encodes an antiviral protein, so HIV-1 is kept in check as long as it is replicating.

Of course, the JV article also brings up some good points about what kind of steady state (if any) can actually be achieved in vivo (in a live person and not just in a plate of cells), and the dangers of crHIV-1 undergoing mutation and/or recombination with HIV-1.

Hope that was helpful.

BTW, I am *VERY* jealous of this grad student.
