I should have a dedicated server running tonight. I may need someone outside my house to help test it. I'm hoping to make it so that it can be set to be owned by The Bronze, and then we don't need to search for dedicated servers when we want to host. And also, so when something kills my PC the entire game doesn't go with it.

So it runs, but the issue is getting it locked down and figuring out how to connect to it for games.
Once that stuff is sorted out, we'll have our own private dedicated server.

The internets seem to suggest that it be password protected. They say to add this line to the server.cfg:
sv_password "thisisthepassword" // Password protect server
The instructions for connecting to your private dedicated server are:
Start your Left 4 Dead game client
Go into Keyboard Options and Enable Developer Console
Press ~ to bring up your developer console and type:
sv_cheats 1
ms_force_dedicated_server x:y
Where x is your WAN IP address and y is the game port (ie 27015).
Close the dev console and then set your lobby options as normal and the lobby will connect directly to your server.
Press ~ during the loading screen, and you will see the password box.
Type in the password that you set for your server.

Right now, it's functional (milk93rd and I played a campaign on it), but it only works if I create the lobby. Systems in my house are the only ones that can see it apparently. The server is associated with our steam group ID, but it doesn't show up anywhere in the lobby.

So the setup for this will be really retarded.
We'll all need to modify our l4d shortcuts, or something similar. I've added a search key for the server (using: disoculated). Should be able to find it using that.
I think you can add +sv_search_key disoculated to the end of your shortcut's launch command, and you will be able to see the server.
As a piece of server software, this thing is a partial failure.

Actually you can just hop into a game and then call a vote to change the map, and/or difficulty. So really the only problem is no choice of character. And I hate vans. |
