We've had two good games this weekend, and I had a lot of fun/learned a lot more respect for the power of Unfair players.  With that in mind, I thought I might start a thread about suggestions on improving our performance and killing more aliens.

Checking on the forums it sounds like Sins is single threaded, and distributed to all players, meaning that the whole game runs as slow as the slowest CPU in the game set.  We might want to run something simple like task manager to see if we're running out of CPU when the game starts lagging.

Another likely possibility on performance would be networking.  That's most likely to affect the hosting machine, and I'll need to check to see if that's running out of capacity.  It wouldn't hurt to check the other clients too.  Since that's testing the capacity of our carriers, I don't know how far that'll go.

Gameplay wise, I was really surprised that at the end of the evening on Sun we were winning in 4 vs 6 (3normal, 2 hard, 1 unfair).  Something that probably could have made it more effective is better planet colonizing/resource allocation.  I'd suggest keeping Cap colonizers around to pick up planets as we advance, and quickly taking up requests by other players that we colonize a world will prevent a lot of hanging around until the planet gets taken or having to come back and re-bomb.

In solo games I've been experimenting with a first wave fleet to destroy enemy ships and fortifications, followed by a second wave fleet of bombers and a colonizer.  The first wave jumps in and wreaks havock, then moves on while the second wave cleans up and colonizes.  Seems to work pretty well overall, so far.  YMMV.

Very cool post that points out the problems of focus fire, what ships are good against other ships (in a simple chart!), that shield mitigation is freaking awesome, what bonuses you get when fighting in a world of your culture (did you know that Tec get more antimatter?), and more.

I like the dual wave idea... that reduces the delay without exposing your siege and colonizer craft to enemy fire.  It also means your main fleet can follow up a fleeing enemy instead of just letting them regroup.

My mechanics thread is here: http://smc.scylla.org/index.php/topic,1242.0.html

Most of that has been updated for 1.05, the counters probably didn't need an update.
